What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is an approach to helping people take control of their health concerns, that is patient-oriented and which generates results that are often not achieved by traditional practices.

Where traditional medicine is often concerned with treating a symptom with a drug, functional medicine strives to identify the cause of the symptom, address the cause with changes of diet, lifestyle and supplementation and decrease the likelihood of it occurring again. That’s not to say that the traditional medical model doesn’t have its place but functional medicine is an approach that has great results in improving health by identification of stressors that cause the body to break down. These may be genetic or induced by the environment but assessment and treatment is easily achieved using the functional medicine model

If you don’t know how your body is functioning on the inside how do you expect to change the outside? I use a variety of clinical tests to help determine real-time internal health so that you can focus on having more, energy, have better health and live the life the way that you want to. Many of these tests have been used to determine client’s health and provide a treatment strategy to get you functioning at your best.

I have worked with clients with the following conditions and the lab work completed has provided valuable insightful information that wouldn’t have been achieved by any other means.

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Weight issues
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Digestive dysfunction
  • Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus and Chrons disease
  • Hormonal dysfunction
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Pain Syndromes
  • Asthma and many other conditions.

Many of the testing that is employed with clients is superior to standard health authority testing, for example the stool testing utilises actual DNA analysis of parasitic and bacterial infections found in the gut, helping us pinpoint any disturbances in gut health in less time and providing you with an answer as to why you have been having health problems or not achieving your targets.

We have a wide range of tests at our disposal, here are just a few tests available.

Gastrointestinal health: DNA analysis of fungal, parasitic or bacterial infections, digestive enzymes, levels of inflammation, beneficial bacterial analysis as well as many other areas.

Food allergy: I am not a big fan of running expensive food allergy tests when the key lies in identifying deeper seated gastro-intestinal issues that can be addressed. Simple elimination diets can be used to identify these problems without you spending money on tests that generally show a symptom, rather than a root cause.

Organic acids: Found out key markers that affect your energy production, liver detoxification ability, mood-related issues and real-time damage to your cells from oxidative damage.

Hormonal Balance: From thyroid function to analysis of key stress hormones produced by stress are great markers for determining your own health and play a big part in understanding issues such as sleep quality and energy production

“I’ve been dealing with chronic/adrenal fatigue recovery for the past 5 years, having been to every medical and alternative specialist in the book looking for a good explanation of what was wrong with me and why I wasn’t bouncing back. I was sure that my system was depleted somehow but every test came back saying I was fine, which I clearly wasn’t.

I eventually found a good rehab personal trainer who helped me to re-integrate good basic habits like getting quality sleep, eating quality protein and doing the right type of exercise for my condition.  He also introduced me to Keith, who ran a series of tests looking at things I’d not ever heard mentioned in 5 years of speaking to experts. And it was through these tests that Keith found an amino-acid deficiency that could be supplemented with tyrosine, which is making a big difference. I’m now about to go through the next steps of improving my digestive health, which was assessed and found to be below par, which Keith is overseeing and which I believe will be another big step towards getting back to full health.”
